The Year of Saint Clare

Very soon, after a major confrontation with the family,
Francis and the brothers took Clare Sant'Angelo
which was a 'new' style group of religious women.
There her sister Catherine came to join her
and the family sent 12 angry knights to force her back.
Through Clare's prayers, they were unable to lift
her up, although they kicked and attacked her,
pulling out her hair in handfulls.
Francis then changed her name to Agnes saying
she had suffered already for the Lamb of God.

This is the altar to which Clare clung.
This chapel is all that remains of the Benedictine church
of San Paolo, Bastia, in the time of Clare.
